Advocacy
Individual Advocacy:
Independent Living specialists have an array of services designed to help you know what your rights are and to help you learn to tell people what you want.
Systems Change Advocacy:
At the heart of every independent living center are people involved in efforts to remove barriers, so people can fully participate in their communities. For many years, people with disabilities have worked to break down barriers that exist in their communities, in the state, and in the nation. System change efforts have brought about The American's With Disabilities Act (ADA), Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and funding so people can live in communities instead of institutions. Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) are part of advocacy as well – by gathering resources and tools for policy making and program development. If you would like to participate in our systems change efforts, contact an Independent living specialist.
