Independent Connection
Self-Directed Services
What is Self Direction?
Self Direction is a design where the person with a disability is in charge of and responsible for the personal attendant services they receive. The law describes five responsibilities you have to self direct your services. These responsibilities are selecting, hiring, training, scheduling, and dismissing your personal attendant.
How We Can Assist You?
Information and Assistance
Independent Connection can help you learn all aspects of self directing your services. Being an employer is difficult and sometimes overwhelming. We can assist you with all aspects of employing your personal assistants. This may include advertising to find your personal attendants, interviewing, hiring, training your personal attendant and communication around issues that arise. Our staff have developed a comprehensive personal attendant “how-to” manual “Self-Direct Instructional Manual” to guide you through every step of the process. For a thorough explanation of self-directed services, review the Kansas Personal Assistance Supports and Services (KPASS) Self-Direction Tool Kit found on the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services website
Payroll Services
Independent Connection offers payroll services to all people that receive Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) and those who do not qualify for services, but choose to privately pay for personal attendant services. Our role is to facilitate all financial aspects, of paying your personal attendant. This includes withholding taxes, paying Workmans Compensation, filing state and federal reports, meeting all waiver regulations, state and federal laws, and billing Medicaid.
