Independent Connection
Youth Services
Are you a teenager who needs someone to talk to?
Do you feel like people do not understand what you are going through?
Are you lonely or do you feel isolated because of your disability?
Independent Connection's youth services address disability issues for children and young adults. We work with families to educate them on options, opportunities, and ideas for children with disabilities. We have staff that sit on the transition councils which is a collaboration of agencies assisting to make the transition from high school a success. We have partnered with the Kansas Families Together organization to provide training and information to families to better understand the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). We will assist families through the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) process.
Our youth team focuses on teaching leadership skills to young people with disabilities. The team is made up of young adults from ages 14-21. The team is lead by a team leader in that age range. The team provides education, information, training, and support to youth with disabilities. They participate in several community activities, for example, getting involved with a GREEN PROJECT to help sustain our natural resources. They go out into the community and volunteer to give back to the community. We have a youth team leader as a current board member for Independent Connection and we are constantly looking at how we can promote the leadership skills that they exhibit.
